How to ask your hotel the right question before booking

Three questions to email a hotel before paying — they reveal the friction most booking sites hide.

Scoring a great rate on a hotel is exciting, but before you hit "Confirm," ask yourself: is it truly foreigner-friendly? China has unique quirks that most booking sites won't mention.

While most travelers focus on price and photos, the real headaches often start after landing — when your card gets declined, your map won't load, or you realize the nearest subway is miles away. Let's fix that now.

Email the hotel these three questions before paying:

1. Connectivity. "Does the in-room Wi-Fi require a Chinese phone number to log in?" If yes, request a portable router or choose another hotel. You'll need instant data upon arrival to set up essential apps and navigation.

2. Payments. "Do you accept foreign credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) at check-in?" Many hotels still rely heavily on WeChat Pay or Alipay. Confirming this avoids the stress of hunting for an ATM on your first day.

3. Logistics. "Are there international supermarkets or convenience stores nearby?" Even better: "How far is the nearest DiDi pick-up spot?" This ensures you can grab late-night snacks or reach the high-speed rail station easily, minimizing language barrier stress.

Pro Tip: While emailing, ask for their full English address and a screenshot of their location on both Apple Maps and Baidu Maps. Save these to your phone. When your taxi driver doesn't speak English, just show them the screen — it's a lifesaver.
