China travel backup plan: cash, card, wallet, translation

The four-step backup plan so a cashless, app-driven country never strands you.

Planning your first trip to China? Get ready for a cashless, app-driven world that can be a bit daunting at first! Here is my ultimate 4-step backup plan to ensure your trip goes smoothly:

Step 1: The Physical Safety Net. While China is virtually cashless, carry ¥200–500 for tiny vendors or Wi-Fi hiccups. Crucially, bring a physical Visa or Mastercard — some luxury hotels and Western stores still require it. Diversify your payment options!

Step 2: Set Up Your E-Wallet. This is your golden ticket. Download Alipay and WeChat Pay before you arrive. Foreigners usually find linking a card to Alipay much smoother. Once you land, get a local SIM ASAP; without data, your e-wallet is useless.

Step 3: Beat the Language Gap. Google Translate is good, but download the offline Chinese pack for subway dead zones. For instant menu translations, Pleco is a lifesaver. Pro tip: Screenshot your hotel address and street signs in Chinese — no signal needed!

China runs on backups. Nail these four steps, and you'll navigate the digital shock like a pro.
