Welcome to the new normal. Since 2020, almost every restaurant in China has gone fully digital, swapping printed menus for QR codes to cut costs and speed up service. Don't panic — and whatever you do, don't leave. Here's exactly how to crack the code.
The ultimate hack: Don't struggle alone. Wave over a server and say, "Can you help me order?" Most staff are happy to assist — some might even pull out a hidden paper menu just for you. Dining with Chinese friends? Hand them your phone.
Going solo? Before you leave your hotel, make sure WeChat or Alipay is installed and linked to your international credit card. Scan the code, and the menu pops up inside a mini-program. Tap photos, check prices, hit the orange "Pay" button — done.
