Payments

What to do if your payment fails at a restaurant

The scan-and-hang moment happens to everyone. Here are four calm fallbacks.

Alright, picture this. You've just finished an amazing hotpot dinner. You scan the code, hit pay… and it just hangs there. Payment failed. Now there's a line behind you, and you're starting to sweat. Sound familiar?

First off, take a deep breath. Seriously, don't panic. This happens to everyone. The waiter isn't judging you; they see this all the time.

Now, if your Alipay or WeChat is acting up — maybe it's a network thing or a card verification loop — don't just keep smashing the pay button. Instead, try switching to Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. That usually works instantly.

Still no luck? Go old school. Just tell the staff "I'll use cash." As long as you've got about 200 RMB tucked away in small bills, you're golden.

But what if you're totally broke? Here's a hack: find a young local or ask the waiter to point someone out. Show them your screen and say, "Can you help me scan this? I'll pay you back in cash." Trust me, Chinese people are super kind and will almost always help you out.

But the best tip? Do it all before you land. Link your cards to the apps while you're still home. Set it and forget it.
