The first hour after landing in Shanghai / Beijing
Your survival guide for the first 60 minutes — transport, payments, apps, and the hotel cheat code.
You've just touched down in Shanghai or Beijing. The initial rush of landing is fading, and reality is setting in — everything here operates differently. Don't panic. Here is your survival guide for the first hour.
Skip the chaotic taxi line outside. China runs on ride-hailing apps. Fire up DiDi, or better yet, hop on the Airport Express or the Maglev if you're heading downtown. It's faster, cheaper, and eliminates fare disputes.
Before you even think about buying water, crack the payment code. Open Alipay or WeChat Pay now while you're still on airport Wi-Fi. Link your international credit card. If you hit a snag, grab some physical Yuan at a currency exchange as a backup. Without this step, you're stuck.
While your payment is processing, download the "Big Three." You already have WeChat and Alipay. Now, get a VPN — do it before you leave the terminal, as Google Maps and WhatsApp won't work reliably once you exit. Also, download DiDi, plus Amap or Baidu Maps for navigation.
Your hotel likely has an English name, but nobody outside the lobby knows how to spell it. Take a screenshot of your hotel's name and address in Chinese characters. Show this to your driver or subway staff. It's the ultimate cheat code for a smooth arrival.
Breathe. You've got this. We are China Travel Helpdesk, turning overwhelming journeys into workable plans.
