What foreigners misunderstand about Chinese train stations
Four truths about Chinese high-speed stations — show up 15 minutes early and you'll miss your train.
Thinking about taking the high-speed train in China? Forget everything you know about the Eurostar or Amtrak. If you don't know these 4 truths, you might actually miss your train.
1. The stations are MASSIVE. We're talking airport-scale. Many foreigners think rolling up 15 minutes early is enough. Nope. You need a solid 45 to 60 minutes just to walk from the entrance to your platform. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
2. Yes, there's airport-style security. Bags get scanned, and you walk through metal detectors. Pro tip: Ditch the belt and empty your pockets before you reach the front of the line. And that half-finished water bottle? Toss it. Liquids over 100ml usually won't make it through.
3. Your gate can change last minute. Unlike the West, Chinese platforms can shift due to operational needs. Never assume your gate is fixed. Always keep one eye on the giant departure boards. See your train number pop up? Move fast!
4. Stop running the length of the train. When the train arrives, look DOWN. Those numbers painted on the platform tell you exactly where your carriage will stop. Stand at your number, and the doors will open right in front of you.
Chinese train stations are incredibly efficient once you know the ropes — but the learning curve is steep.
